Van gogh to Go-SWAN ART FESTIVAL 2014

Van Gogh to Go final single

Kids of all ages will plant a sunflower seed in a newspaper “pot”.  Once the seed sprouts it can be planted in the garden or yard. The kids will also create a sunflower and a vase from paper to adorn the little newspaper pot while waiting on the sprout. Children will learn about how the sunflower grows and how another artist (Vincent van Gogh) so loved the sunflower.  This sunflower sprout (at right) is one week old.  Sunflower seeds were harvested from the Winter Center Community Garden last year, with thanks to Mr. Roberts!  Also check out the SWAN Ballon by Winter Center volunteer balloon artists!

Celebrate Creativity!!  Celebrate ART!!

Taking the words of artist Jasper Johns and Georgia O’Keefe to heart, kids at the Swan Festival created their own flags from cotton with ink and flair!  Shakers were also made with Washi Tape and scented and colored rice in recycled plastic eggs.  The flags and shakers were carried by kid and adults alike as they went on parade with the “Funky Butt Brass Band”

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.
—Georgia O’Keeffe

THRE FLAGS by JASPER JOHNS

COLOR, SHAPE, Rhythm and BALANCE

“Using the design of the American flag took care of a great deal for me because I didn’t have to design it. So I went on to similar things like the targets – things the mind already knows. That gave me room to work on other levels.”

PICK FLAG: Square, Feather, BIG, Little

ADD SOME COLOR: Markers

Q-TIP Painting:  Spread the color

MAKE IT SOAR

SHAKERS-EGGS are a symbol of Life and Growth!!  Rattles and Shakers are traditional for shaking out and starting fresh—bringing in the good and growth of a new time or season!  Fill your egg with color and sound! Celebrate the Creativity of Life and Art! Use the Washi Tapes to seal your shaker…AND SHAKE!!!  (Washi Tapes are colorful tapes that are like the special Japanese papers for Origami and art)

SHAKE, SHAKE And SHAKE some more!
